Recently I had an opportunity of working together with Sabri, a fellow portrait photographer. We planned a “recce trip” to Fraser’s Hill and thought that it would be a good excuse to bring a model up there to do some portrait as well, and I’m glad we did. This is also a good time to test out my new Sigma 56mm F1.4 lens that I acquired not long ago.
The day started with gloomy and rainy throughout the whole morning. As we reached Fraser’s Hill, we took shelter at a cafe in Puncak Inn since it was still drizzling. We politely asked for permission to do some portrait session in the cafe vicinity and was granted green light to go ahead. Since it’s not a very big place to begin with, I did not set up any lighting and just shoot with available lighting… which is overcast and cloudy.
Here are some of the shots in the cafe.
Good thing is, we went during a weekday… which means the place was quiet and almost empty. So, if any of you guys are also interesting to bring models up here to shoot, this cafe seems to be quite photography friendly… but of course depends on if it’s peak or non-peak season.
As we approached midday, the rain finally subsided and we were greeted with fresh and bright shiny day. Without wasting any time, we headed out nearby the clock tower. Over here there are some nice red bench and telephone booth, which we made full use of them.
Some shots below.
Most of the shots were lighted up with Godox AD-B2 bracket (with 2x AD-200) coupled with a parabolic light modifier as the main light… although some of them were pure available lighting.
Here’s one of the Behind The Scene photo.
On this particular shot, I placed the main light on the left and used the TTL settings to auto fill in some flash towards Michelle’s left side. Shot with Xt4 + Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC. Camera settings was at F1.4 wide open with 1/6400s shutter speed and ISO of 160.
Here’s the result below.
Right after that, as evening is approaching fast… we headed to The Paddock, our last stop for our recce trip. Went in there and saw some caretakers and again politely asked them for permission to shoot. No problem at all. Since the sun is out (no more overcast and cloudy) and is quite low at the horizon, we decided to shoot just on available light.
Here’s some photos of The Paddock.
So, it seems that Fraser’s Hill is really a photography friendly place after all. There are many great spots waiting to be discovered too.
